Get a Scholarship from Public Listed Company in Malaysia: Advantages, Procedure and Example

Previously, I shared about "Scholarship, Sponsorship and Education loan in Malaysia" and "List of Scholarship for Malaysian students to Pursue Full-Time Degree Programmes" in Xaivier Blog.  After being an stock market investor for years, I find out that lots of public listed companies in Malaysia also provide attractive scholarships for youth to continue their higher education without worrying about financial issues.

Yes, it is very competitive to outperform other when applying those well-known scholarship. Therefore, I would like to recommend a different channel so that those needy can have a scholarship to pursue higher level education.

There are some advantages of applying public listed company's scholarship:
1. Applicant has an opportunity to introduce he or she to potential employers during interview session.
2. Scholarship holders have very high chance to have a job offer from their scholarship sponsor immediately after graduate.
3. Sometimes, scholarship holders will be invited for their annual dinner. It is a very nice experience and chance to build network.

How to apply public listed company's scholarship.
There is no free lunch in this world. In order to find a suitable scholarship, you still need to do some homework first. Nevertheless, let me use an example to show you how to find a scholarship from public listed company in Malaysia.

1. Firstly, do find your interested field of study. For example, if you want to be a civil engineer, you can list out all public listed companies which provide construction, properties or relevant products and services.

2. Go to their official website and search whether scholarship is provided or not. If not, do read their latest annual report to once again search for scholarship information.

3. If nothing about scholarship is found, proceed to the next potential sponsor.

Example: Construction and Properties Developer Company: KEN Holdings Berhad

From KEN Holdings Berhad Annual Report 2011:
"KEN HOLDINGS BERHAD continues its commitment towards education and training our youth who will be the future leaders of tomorrow. KEN FOUNDATION had been providing scholarships to qualifying Malaysians and internship trainings at the Group’s subsidiary companies to equip them with the requisite practical experience to groom them for their future.
Our scholarship recipients have since graduated and have joined the Malaysian work force in various disciplines and are contributing towards our national development. Some have joined the Group and are part of our succession plan to build a strong pipeline of future talent as we believe the notable performance of the Group is not only from the quality of assets but also the strength of the people managing and operating those assets

After that, we can also find lots of information about this scholarship from KEN official website*: such as:
1. Which degree program is relevant for the application.
2. The value of the scholarship.
3. Eligible or requirements.
4. The way to apply.

Of course, once you have a list of potential sponsors for your tertiary education, all you need to do is wait for time when those scholarships are opened for applying. Therefore, it is better for you to check their news weekly from newspaper or their announcement from their official website. That's all for today. More fascinating articles and sharing will be updated from time to time in Xaivier Blog. So, you are welcome to subscribe our feed, look at our sitemap or simply visit our Homepage.

Hi there! i'm interested in pursuing in degree of interior architecture. it's kinda hard to get a company that offers scholarship. could you help me with that pleaseeee :)

Xaivier Chia said...

Hi there,

For interior architecture, I think you can try to contact properties companies, e.g. KEN holding, Setia Group etc listed companies in Malaysia.

Another way is to contact your prospective employer (to ask them to sponsor or provide scholarship for your study) so that after graduate, you will work in the company.

I hope these would help you.

All the best.

Hi, I am from Bangladesh and doing bachelor in business administration in University of Malay. Not all the companies provide scholarship for international students. Can you please tell me which company i should refer for scholarship i am doing quite good result in my university. i really want to get a scholarship. please help me on that.

Xaivier Chia said...

Hi Zakia,

Firstly, I agree that most of the local companies only provide scholarship to local students because the recipients will be their prospective employees and it is also some sort of social responsible for local companies.

Unless you plan to work in the country (normally scholarship recipients need to serve the company for at least few years), it is better for you to consult your university financial unit about other financial aids in the university.

Financial aids e.g. teaching assistance, student working scheme should be available for you to apply.

Lastly, you can also use your weekend or holiday to earn extra money using your knowledge.

All the best.

Hi, is there masters scholarship for psychology/counseling.. =)

Xaivier Chia said...

Hi Carmeni Serine,

Generally, most of them are just for undergraduate study.

For master or PhD study, you can apply teaching assistant or student working scheme or research student grant etc for financial support. For more information, please refer to your university website or your faculty or lecturers.

All the best.

Hi there, would you mind to suggest a few companies for accounting and finance? I got a uk degree offer but I missed all the deadlines:(

Xaivier Chia said...

Hi wying,

I am not sure whether local companies offer oversea scholarship or not. Because it involves huge amount compared to those study locally.

One of solution is visit your prospect university for the provision of financial aids.

Maybe you can visit the website of some outsourcing local listed companies e.g. sympony, scicom, and banks e.g. maybank, cimb, for more information.

all the best.

Hi there! I'm interested in pursuing a degree in international relations or studies overseas. It's kinda hard to get a company that offers a scholarship for that field of subject. Can you please help me with this problem?

Xaivier Chia said...

Hi Lai,

You need to figure out what you will contribute to the potential company or society after your graduation.

Because the main aim of each scholarship should assist people who will contribute to the company / society in the future.

If you manage to find a good argument, then you may write a format letter to those companies for interview.

For listed companies, you can find their information at bursamalaysian.com.

All the best.

Let me just list out few of them that may offer you a scholarship here. Hoping that it will be a good start-up for you to continue searching your desired sponsors soon.
