Internal Rate of Return: Case Study: Saving Plan - Think IRR first Before Invest

Today, I am going to share some insight about the so-called saving plan and to point out some important aspects we should concern about. Besides, I will also demostrate the computation of the effective interest rate of the return from the saving plan. The two cases of saving plan are what I heard before. So, lets justify the so-called return based on IRR – Internal Rate of Return calculation:

For this ‘Plan’, all you need to do is to save 28,000 annually for 10 years. In between these years, you will ‘receive’ some cash return as shown in the cash flow below (case 1): 3,600 for first three years, then 8,400 for the consecutive years until the mature date.

MMODE (0059): Employee Share Option Scheme (“ESOS”) 2011

Here is some of my homework of MMODE (0059). It may consist of mistakes due to human errors. So, don't take it so serious and please let me know. Thanks

According to the MMODE annual report 2010, the ESOS of MMODE actually have been given out since 25 April 2005

"Proposed employee share option scheme of up to ten percent (10%) of the issued and paid-up share capital of M-Mode ("Proposed ESOS")" which is around 96,267,000 x 0.1 = 9,600,000 shares

After given a bonus 1:2, total issued shares became 144,400,500 (2006) compared to 96,267,000 (2005).

Happy Winter Solstice (Mid Winter Day) 2011 冬至快乐 + Some Thought

It is good to have family members and friends get together during this special season. But the unlimited money always costs lots of our limited time in our daily basis.

Life is short. Enjoy more priceless pleasure. Yes, it is priceless and costs you nothing but your precious time.

So, what do you want from your priceless time? To exchange it to priceless happiness or priced pleasure? It is up to you. No one force you to have a big car, branded bag, slim and fit body, etc. This is only our personal desires to show off.

As always, human's weakness: Fear and Greed.
Fear to lose face so buying expensive (but always useless) things to show off in front of others.
Greed, buying discounted things which is always useless at the end.

So, conquer your fear and greed, you will achieve better life everyday.

8 Things I Have Learnt and Experienced from a Virtual Game (Dragons of Atlantis) : Appreciation Create Fulfillment and Happiness Life

Yesterday, I suddenly realize and understand the reason why appreciation make our life more pleasant and contentment after playing a virtual game (Dragons of Atlantis) in Google Plus for around two weeks.

My journey of Dragons of Atlantis is stated as follows:
“Initially, I was given 7 days protection to build my “virtual empire”. So, I was very excited to make my “empire” stronger before the end of the protection. After having a small group of army, I tried to attack other players to obtain more resources to enhance my “empire”. Everything was nice since no

Financial Management: Introduction - Risk Management - Investment, Insurance, Commodities and Cash

Personally, I think Financial Management is a combination of Risk and Investment Management. Risk management help us to hedge the unexpected potential risk in our life. Investment Management, on the other hand, assists us get rid of being victim from inflation and subsequently grow wealth from it.

Risk Managment
There are three main types of unexpected potential risk in our life is Death, Accidents and Illness. Luckily, all of them can be hedged by buying a Personal Accident and Medicate Card Insurance. But please bear in mind that the total sum of payment for risk management should not more than 20% of your salary. Besides, the sum of insured should be based on each individual needs. For instance, Person A want to save 100K money for his son educational fee after 10years. To avoid those unexpected potential risk during these 10 years saving plan, Person XXX can buy total sum insured of 100K annually for death benefit to hedge the risk, which normally only cause few hundred annually. Another example is if Person XXX has a housing mortgage of 200K, he also better to buy a Personal Accident Insurance with total sum insured of at least 200K to avoid this mortgage will be a burden if unexpected potential risk happens. Again, yearly payment for such insurance normally only costs few hundreds.

Life Insight: Appreciate Your Time with Your Kids

Life is strange.

When children are still young and want to stick with their parents;
Parents are busy to earn money.
When parents want to accompany with children;
Children are already used to the life without parents;
So they are normally closed to their peers instead of their parents.

Ask yourself:
Are your children really need a iPhone or luxury car or house to have a better life?

Need or want?

Understand them, distinguish them, your life would be different.

Internal Rate of Return (IRR) -The Trick of Monthly Installment with Low Annual Interest Rate

Annual Interest Rate: 8%
Amount of Loan: $10,000
Annual Interest: $800
Total load (plus interest) = $10,800
Divided by 12 months,
monthly payment: 10800/12 = $900

Does it look like very usual for you about your monthly installment plan?

Be careful!!

Price per Earnings (PE) Ratio (PER)- Controllable Variable or Uncontrolable Variables

Controllable variable is a variable which is under control by us, while Uncontrollable variable is its opposite.
For Price per Earnings (PE) Ratio, or PER, we can analogue the price is a controllable variable and the Earnings is an uncontrollable variable.

The price that we are willing to pay to a particular investment is controllable by ourself.  Although sometimes people will tell us that a particular business "should" have particular PER, it does not mean we should invest it with the PER. In most of the time, the higher the PER, the lower the safety margin. For example, if a particular investment already has PER of 20, (Price/Earning = $2.00/$0.10 = 20), with estimated profit of 100%, its PER must soar to 40,with the assumption that its earning is maintained.

Cash Machine: Low Capital Expense (CAPEX) + Low Fixed and Variable Costs

"Most successful companies earn a lot while using little, and firms that spend little and sell their wares quickly are best" - Stock Screen by Jack Hough in Smart Money (October 2009)

I am quite agree the statement of Jack. In fact, if a particular company can do what Jack said, it is a supreme company. Only supreme company can reduce or maintain a very low Capital Expense (CAPEX) and other fixed and variable costs to grow its business. With a very low CAPEX and other costs, this kind of company is the so-called "Cash Machine". Every day, the goods or services of the company will become CASH, and then, only portion of CASH is consumed by CAPEX and other costs, and the remainder cash, of course, will soon flow into shareholders' pocket (as dividend) or retained to expand its business significantly (business acquisition).

Demand VS Supply in Stock Market: Greed + Fear = Big Disaster!!

Firstly, let me give you a situation:

Demand
Most people:"Want to buy a Stock which will move up very quickly."
Supply
Company H: "Let me help you!!" (But will down very quickly too. (Silent))

Every time when I see the so-called victims complaint about be cheated, fall in trap, etc. Most of the time, nothing is wrong or correct. Because nobody forces you to put your money out from your pocket (even you have many reasons to do it due to greed and fear).

Greed about losing "opportunity" to earn money.
Fear about the same thing - "losing "opportunity" to earn money".

Therefore, Greed + Fear = Double Fears = Double Greeds = Big Disaster!!!

Therefore, please bear in mind that always be responsible to our actions and think twice before act.

KEN HOLDINGS BHD (KEN, 7323) - Q3 2011: Within Expectation

Everyday, one of the happy activities I do is to read the financial reports of my invested companies. What I feel about from the financial report is that it is really very difficult to earn 10sen from RM1.00 annually. You may think that it is a easy task. Let me clarify properly: get profit from RM0.10 from RM1.00 annually is equivalent to interest rate of 10% annually, which is 300% more than our current fixed deposit rate (around 3.3%). So, are you still think it is a easy task to complete annually?

Let's go back to the main focus today, KEN (7323) third quarter report also comes out already. So far so good. After receiving so many Cash from receivable, finally, KEN did what I expect it to do from last quarter, that is, CAPEX.

OPCOM HOLDINGS BHD (OPCOM, 0035) Q3 Quarter Report 2011: So Far So Good.

Personally, I quite like OPCOM business even using the special dividend I received from OPCOM to top up some more OPCOM shares to enjoy the grow of its future earning. Although this Q3 report is relatively less attractive compared to preceding year's corresponding quarter and preceding quarter, OPCOM still maintain its attractive areas (Zero borrowing, low CAPEX, Strong Cash flow, lots of Cash).

Let's take a look at what OPCOM comments from its Q3 report:
Review of Performance
The Group registered revenue of RM22.6 million and profit before tax of RM6.7 million in current quarter as compared to revenue and profit before tax of RM34.5 million and RM9.3 million respectively in the preceding year's corresponding quarter. The sales of the Group's products was affected by the festive season which resulted in lower revenue contribution in current quarter. However, profit before tax margin for the current quarter was higher as there was relatively more sales of higher margin products.

Insurance - Be aware of Automatic Premium Loan (APL)

"Don't worry! All you need to pay is for the first six year. After then, the profit of the insurance will cover the rest of premium payment". Does it sound familiar to you? Be careful. There is no free lunch in real world. Based on my personal experience, we should always avoid "Automatic Premium Loan (APL)".

Interest Rate of Automatic Premium Loan (APL)
The first thing we need to concern about is how many interest rate of the loan. Normally, it is quite high, more than 6%, for example. Besides, the policy will only valid with the condition that the cash value must always more than the payable loan.

For instance, a total of $3000 have been paid for 6 years. Then the insurance will keep active as long as the amount of loan (automatic premium loan) is lower than the cash value.

Personally, I quite like the strategy of TESCO to giveaway RM10 Cash Voucher as a reward to its clubmembers. RM10 discount when you are spending a total of RM100 means you can save 10% from your purchases in TESCO. Besides, if you are using credit card and TESCO reward card (of course, you must have it to enjoy this privilege), you can get at least another 0.5% debate from your credit card and the reward card, respectively, or total at least 1%.

This time, TESCO has implemented more clear guideline for this exclusive rewards compared to previous TESCO RM10 Voucher giveaway as stated below:

How to Estimate the Enter Point in Stock Market: Potential Profit / lose = Risk / Uncertainty - Case study: MMODE (0059)

We always want to know when is the best time to buy or sell in stock market. In fact, that is no such a thing in real world. All is about risk and potential profit/lose. The higher the risk, the high the potential profit/lose. And the risk is based on the uncertainty of a particular business. In this post, I am going to use MMODE as an example to explain this idea.

MMODE announced its impressive EPS in its first quarter of 2011, its market price was only 0.165~0.17, if the EPS can be maintain, estimated PE was only around 2.2. In other words, there was huge potential profit (>100%) when PE is adjusted to 5 from 2.2. But its risk was also very big: Can MMODE maintaine its EPS in the future? Can the receiveable be received? After that, the price gone up to around 0.19~0.26 until second quarter.

Yes, another impressive EPS was report in second quarter. But unfortunately, Bear was coming, the MMODE price had been press to 0.22~0.31 for few weeks before it soared to 0.35~0.40. With average of 0.30, PE was adjusted to around 3.3. This is because more people have more confident about its future due to the fact of impressive EPS in last consecutive two quarters. Uncertainty was relatively less compared to the first quarter since the EPS of second quarter shown that the EPS of MMODE keep moving up.

M-MODE BERHAD (MMODE, 0059) - Q3 2011 :Keep Moving and Growing

M-MODE BERHAD (MMODE, 0059) Third Quarter Report comes out early yesterday night. What a surprise!! The new strategy implemented by the company look really work well. Firstly, let's see what is the comment from the company:

"The Group recorded an impressive increase in revenue as compared to the previous year's corresponding quarter from RM7,580,000 to RM17,610,000. whereas, the profits attributable to shareholders has increased by RM3,014,000 to RM3,913,000 as compared to previous year's corresponding quarter of RM899,000. The increase in revenue was mainly due to new strategic directions set by the Management in leveraging our strong execution capabilities and providing a wider premium portfolio of media assets to increase user' value and loyalty to our services."

“Yes, finally… I finish my task.” Is this sound familiar with you? This is because experienced employees know the disclosed secret in the workplace, that is, “work can never be finished”.

However, please don’t get me wrong. I am not asking you to stop doing your work since your work can never be finished. Rather, having a better understanding about the fact and a right attitude toward this matter, you will enjoy your job ultimately.

When Stock Market Reaches its Bottom - Based on Global semiconductor industry association Sales Reports

Unpredictable Market Trend- Based on FBMKLCI, the bull started from 2003 May to 2004 Mar, then continued adjustment for around 2.5 years. The strong bull continues climbing the mountain from Jun 2006 to the peak at Dec 2007 (around 1.5 years). After that, the bear came immediately started from Jan 2008 to Oct 2008 (around 10 months), then a baby bull was reborned and grow slowly for Nov 2008 to March 2009 (around 5 months). When the baby bull was strong enough, it started to climb the mountain from April 2009 to Jun 2011 (around 2.2 years). So, what will happen next? What can we refer to?

Based on Global semiconductor industry association Sales Reports, when all the negative news were reported (December 2008 to April 2009) only during the FBMKLCI market reached its bottom (Nov 2008 to March 2009). However, this is the hardest period for all investors when all negative and bad news continue bomb-blasting the mind of investors to make bad decision (selling their shares in the bottom of the market).

A Better Way to Manage Your Fixed Deposit Account – Having enough FDs which mature in different consecutive months

Besides allocating main fund in investment portfolio, tools such as fixed deposit account provides a relative secure and liquidity for investors to ensure they have sufficient cash to invest more in the future when opportunity comes or rebalance their portfolio when economy crisis occurs. As we know, opportunity is for people who have enough preparation. This preparation is in terms of capital and knowledge. So, in this post, I would like to share the way I use to manage my high liquidity account, that is, Fixed Deposit Account.

1. Liquidity Vs Return
The first thing I concern about is how to optimize the liquidity of my Fixed Deposit account. Generally, the interest rates of one month and one year fixed deposit accounts are slightly different, that is, less than 0.5%. Therefore, personally, I prefer to “sacrifice” the extra “0.5%” to optimize both liquidity and return of my fixed deposit. In other words, I use the 0.5% interest to buy an “insurance” in such a way that my fixed deposit account will earn interest even though I need to cash out it suddenly within one year. Moreover, this approach makes me more comfortable to cash out my fixed deposit anytime for better investment in the future.

Personal Financial Management 1: To Differentiat the Need and Want in Our Daily Basis

The first thing to do in personal financial management is to distinguish our Needs and Wants. Needs is something that is necessary to our daily basis. For example, we need water to survive; we need food to survive; we need to have a sun glass to protect our eye; etc. Wants, on the other hand, is something that will fulfill our desires, temporary. For instance, we want to drink beer to get rid of stress, temporary; we want to eat $100 per meal instead of $10 per meal to make us look like more superior, temporary; we want to have a branded sun glass that costs extra of $300 to protect our eye; etc

However, the fact is it quite hard to distinguish Needs and Want in our life. For example, car can be categorised either Needs or Wants. For a salespeople, having a car can be considered as Needs. This is because car is a essential tool for salespeople to do their business. Salespeople need to travel from one place to another place everyday depends on their marketing strategy. Without a car, salespeople will face difficulty to do their business. In constrat, if your workplace is just 1km a way from your home or the public transport is quite convenient for you, having a car is considered as Wants unless you have special reasons.

When should Investor to Rebalance, Hold or Cut loss When the Market Price Drops

In stock market investment, after buying some shares of a certain company, we need to monitor the financial condition and profitability of the company in order to make a better decision on it. When the market price drops, we got paper loss. However, knowing that the market price is so-volatile in short-term period of time, we should make our mind calm down first. And then, review the condition of the company before making a decision to: Rebalance, Hold, and Cut-loss

My personal strategy:
Rebalance, only if
1. The fundamental of the company is still the same or even better.
2. Cheap sell due to the EQ of "investors".
3. It is already cheap enough.

Three Investment Advices that Beginners Need to Know

To an inexperienced eye, the art and science of smart investment is more like voodoo magic than it is calculated risk. But, as with poker, all is not random chance or luck; there is skill involved with investment, there is strategy, expertise, and prediction that all go into making a good investment decision.

Many people are discouraged, though, by the complexity of investment, and settle for steady, stable jobs, instead of making unwise or uninformed investment decisions. While this is probably a wise move—you really shouldn't invest if you don't know what you're doing—you shouldn't keep a lack of knowledge keep you from investing if you're interested in it, or just want to make some extra money. The key is to just research and then apply that knowledge. And you can start that research right here, right now, by reading these three investment-beginner pointers.

A Comparison of Mutual Fund and Stock Market Investment: Personal View

Mutual fund is a fund, which accumulates money from many investors, managed by a fund manager or a team for investment. Generally, most of the money will be invested in stock market. Personally, I more prefer to stock market investment. Maybe the mutual fund agent who tried to convince me to invest mutual fund is right: We do not need to spend time to analyze a particular company while we still can invest our money. However, there are five important points I care about:

1. Who is the fund manager?
Of course, if Warren Buffett is the fund manager, I will invest my money in the fund. But the problem, most of the investors is speculators. Unless I know who the fund manager is, I will never consider this kind of investment.

As an investor, it is very crucial to find the first hand information of their invested company. Newspaper, however, does not give all the latest announcement of all listed companies in Bursa Malaysia. Therefore, as a shareholder, it is good idea to update your company yourself from Bursa Malaysia official website. In Bursa Malaysia, announcements are sorted into Current, History and Archives. All the latest announcement can be found in Current. Previous announcements that were published in last several months can be found in History. Archives records all older announcements that cannot be found in Current and History.

Cash Flow Statement: A Brief Introduction: Operating, Investing and Financing activities

Cash flow statement shows the amount of cash and cash equivalents that flow in and out of a company at the end of a financial report. For example, the cash flow statement of quarter 3 indicated the amount of cash flow in last nine months (quarter 1 + quarter 2 + quarter 3).

Next, there are three sections in a cash flow statement, that are, operating cash flow, investing cash flow and financing cash flow.

1. Cash flow from operating activities
In this section, normally, what we expect to see is positive cash flow, that is, a particular company can generate CASH from its operating activities. However, sometimes the negative cash flow is acceptable once awhile in some quarters due to the fact that some receivable cash is not yet received but some payable is paid first or inventory is increased. Nevertheless, good companies should always try their best to manage their financial properly in the way that positive cash flow from operating activities is maintained annually. Examples of Cash Flow into (positive) the Operating Activities are Sale of goods or services, interest revenue, dividend; and examples of Cash flow out (negative) from the Operating Activities are Inventory purchases, payroll, taxes, interest expense etc.

OPCOM HOLDINGS BHD (0035): Mini Review

I bought OPCOM at market price of RM0.805 last month (August 2011). The reasons for me to buy OPCOM simply because it has stable earnings (extension two-year contact with TM), strong internal cash flow generation, zero borrowing and no bad dividend.

Moreover, with the market price of RM0.805 to buy OPCOM, which contained RM0.56 cash per share, is equivalent to I only bought it with RM0.245 per cash. With expected EPS of 16sen annually, I will get back 100% investment capital within two years. Therefore, I believe that is the main reason why I was braved enought to enter the market during the period when bear market news were everywhere in the market.

My Road Map to Achieve Financial Freedom: 10% + 20 years + 720K = 6k passive Income

Financial freedom means you are no longer work for money. But you still can work for fun, joy, personal interest, pursuing your dream or contributing to social. First and foremost, we must have enough passive income to support our daily life in achieve financial freedom. Personally, I believe that if I have 6k passive income, then it is the time for me to quit my routine job and focus on the life I want for the rest of my life (Except I am quite enjoying my job which gives me some sort of satisfaction from time to time). But the problem is how to generate this 6k passive income.
After having this goal (that is, to generate 6k passive income per month), I have identify two essential tools for me to achieve it. The first is the ability to generate at least 10% return annually; and the second is to accumulate enough capital.

Stock Investment: The Reason of Panic Sell or Buy and How to Overcome them

The only reason that makes people panic sell or buy is – Greed.

Panic Sell
People who panic sell because they do not want to miss the “chance” to buy-back later with lower price to earn more profit.

Panic Buy
People who panic buy because they do not want to miss the “chance” that the growing market price will keep growing and there always got “other” people who willing to buy from them with higher cost (market price).

VIS: My first 200% Profit Return from Bursa Malaysia 2011 - Experience Sharing

VIS is my first 200% ++ return from Bursa Malaysia 2011. I bought VIS when it was only RM0.12. “Are you crazy?” My brother asked me. “Its market price is only RM0.12. Don’t you fear it will bankrupt suddenly? Besides, its volume is so low, only few shares or even no transaction per day.” However, after my fear made me regret few times previously, I decided that I must believe in my study and analysis.  As a result, I bought VIS when its volume was low and its market price was only RM0.12.

I still remember that when I analysis VIS, I found that VIS was very profitable with profit margin of around 50% and EPS of 1.5sen in consecutive three quarters. What is good deal! I told myself. EPS of 1.5sen per quarter is equivalent to 6sen per year or PE of 0.12/0.06 = TWO!!! What is surprise!! After I bought VIS, it dropped to RM0.11. And then, after few weeks, VIS soared to RM0.15-0.18. I was so happy because it meant I got profit of around 50% if I sold it. But when I recap my analysis again, it was too cheap to sell VIS at RM0.18. So I decided to keep it. And then, its market price dropped back to RM0.13-0.14. At this time, the voices which advise me to sell it surround me every day.

Identify and Invest in CASH MACHINE to Succeed in Stock Investment

Recently many people used BEAUTY CHINA HOLDINGS LIMITED as a lesson or a reference to "advice" investors get rid of China IPO. They emphasize the similarity of current China IPO with BEAUTY CHINA HOLDINGS LIMITED, that are, large amount of CASH and low PE. Hereby, I would like deliver some different point of view via analysis BEAUTY CHINA HOLDINGS LIMITED based on its annual report from 2006 to 2008 (which is free and available from SGX website) to give some fair for other China IPO.
Personally, I still believe that most of the time, a particular company will become the so-called SCAM is because the owners of the business cannot further its business to earn money. Therefore, all we need to do is to find a profitable business. Remember, no one will try to turn a profitable business into a SCAM to earn a one-shot profit; but it is possible for a bad business.

How to Search a House or Room for Rent / Buy

Finding a room for rent is one of the problems that many people, who are going to work far away from their hometown, must tackle it. Some lucky people can stay with their relatives or friends. But most of us need to rent a room as soon as possible. Hereby, I would like to share the free but effective tools that I use to find a house/room for rent/buy, that are, Google Maps and Google Search Engine.

1. Location
The first step is to find the company, which you are going to work, in Google Maps. It could be as simple as typing the address of the company and then click search.

2. Scope
After that, do try to list out all local residential areas you can find around the workplace from the Google Maps. This is to narrow the scope of search areas and ensure your prospect living place will not far away from your workplace.

How to Make an Area Clean and Clear - Do not provide rubbish bin anywhere

During the day I visited Singapore, I found that I had difficulty to find a rubbish bin to throw litter and yet the place I visited was so clean. Luckily, I used to collect those things in my pocket until I see the rubbish bin. From this experience, I come out some ideas that may useful to make our environment clean.
Do not provide rubbish bin anywhere.

Why? It is because more rubbish bins in an area means it encourage people to throw their rubbish. Don't get me wrong, it is good to encourage people to throw litter into rubbish bin. However, the fact is you are nurturing people to throw rubbish anywhere!!! So, when these people, who have used to throwing rubbish anytime anywhere, reach an area which do not have rubbish bin, they will feel uncomfortable. After that, surprisingly, they might give you an "strong" excuse such as "it is the fault of the authorities since they do not put more rubbish bin to suit people NEED!!".

TED: Philip Zimbardo: The demise of guys?

Thanks for Philip Zimbardo raises up the awareness of our social problems. I believe this kind of social problems is globally instead of locally. Greed and fear is the ultimate Mass Destructive Weapon in this world. So, the question is: do we have enough determination and commitment to overcome it and put aside our self-interest?

A strategy for Market Collapse: Panic Sell or Cut Loss?

When market "seems" will collapse soon. Debt crisis, political crisis, etc. Suddenly, Cash returns as the King, again. Brokers and friends suggest that 20% cut loss is essential to retain our capital. However, what I think about is to implement a strategy to avoid being a victim of panic sell or selling my shares with lowest point.

Until today, I still cannot figure out why do we need to cut loss. Yes, you may say that we can buy back when the price of the stock drops even further. But, as value investor, the stock I bought is already undervalued. Cut loss maybe means I have no faith in my choices.

5 Steps to Save Your Money

Your wealth is not dependent on how much you have earned, but how much you have accumulated. But the first step to accumulate our wealth is through saving. In this post, I am going to state five steps I have used to save my money.

1. Never Trust the Salesperson.
Generally, all salespeople have some sort of conflict of interest about our money. The duty of salespeople, of course, is to close a sale or deal as quickly as possible in order to maximize their income. Nevertheless, if salespeople who only get month paycheck without any bonus regarding their sales performance, then most of the time this salesperson will not so hardworking to pursue you to buy their products. In short, we must think twice about the words from salesperson specially who has conflict of interest about our money.

After knowing the Business strategy, Segments and Prospect of SAPIND (7811) in last Fundamental Analysis, in this post, I am going to discuss the financial condition and profitability of SAPIND. This is my strategy in stock market investment, that is, first of all, I must understand its basic business structure. After that, I must make sure that the financial condition is healthy. And then, I must investigate whether this business is profitable or not. Finally, I will calculate whether its market price makes it a good deal?

Let's go back to the today topic, SAPIND (7811), Fundamental Analysis 2 - Financial Condition and Profitability.

Part 1 : Financial Condition

Based on the last seven years data (2005 to 2011), the current ratio maintained around one, the acidic or quick ratio also maintained around 0.8, and the cash ratio also maintained around 0.2. For Beginners: 4 Free Classes That'll Improve Your Finance / Investment Skills

Those who did not focus on finance or business applications in school may find themselves in a really big bind as they grow older and realize how important these two subjects are in maintaining and maximizing their personal income. But if you do not have the time and/or money to return to school to acquire a formal education in these principles there is fortunately another alternative you can take—free online courses. These courses are provided by note-worth sources located in both the U.S. and the UK and although you can't claim credit (and thus can't technically be "certified" in these areas) the old class materials offered by these institutions can in fact help you become better acquainted in these fields. With that said, the classes listed below are perfect for those that do not have the slightest clue about finances or for those looking for a "refresher course."

1. Economics.
It might prove to be extremely difficult to understand the financial markets and investing without having a firm understanding of money-making principles learned in an economics course. Thus this "introductory package" is comprised of 5 different mini-courses—Intro to Economics, Intro to Microeconomics, International Economics, Managerial Economics and Macroeconomics for Managers— in an effort to teach beginners the core principles of economic institutions, including property rights, markets, business organizations, labor unions, money and banking, trade, and taxation. Google Page Rank Drop: From Three to One - A Review

Today, I found out that my Page Rank become ONE instead of three suddenly. What a sad news!! After Google some news about Google Page Rank, I realize that it is normal case especially when Google modify their algorithm to calculate Page Rank. In other words, every time when Google re-evaluate Page Rank, the Page rank of some website will be either increased, reduced or maintained.
Here are some reasons which explain why my PR drop:

1. Lack of New Post Update
In 2011, I only update Xaivier Blog once per week compared to almost everyday during 2010. That is why I only spent around 6 months to get PR of THREE when I started this blog during 2010.
2. High Bounce Rate
Bounce Rate is the percentage of one-page viewers in the website. In order words, higher bounce rate means the contents of the website do not relate to each other well, so the visitors only read the particular post. (Note: We can use Google Analytic Tools to check the Bounce Rate. Read More.)
3. Traffic Source
More than 80% visitors of Xaivier Blog is from Search Engines. It may be good to Google Adsense Revenue. But in the long run, I hope I can use this advantage to increase more direct traffic or the number of returning visitors.

How to do homework: EPS, Market Price, Profit Margin, Acid Ratio, Cash Flow, Dividend

In this post, I am going to list out five important indicators which I often use to assess whether a particular company is worth for invest or not. These five indicators consist of safety margin (PE), business profitability (Profit Margin), financial condition (Acid Ratio or Quick Ratio), cash management (Cash flow), and shareholders' return (Dividend).

1. PE = Market Price / EPS
Before making any investment decision, what I am interested in is how many money a particular business or company can earn in terms of Earning per Share (EPS). This is because the market price of the business is in terms of price for one Share. For example, the market price of XZY company is $5.00 with EPS of $0.50. This means that if we acquire the whole business of this company with the market price of $5.00, and if this company can maintain its earning with EPS of $0.50 annually, we can breakeven by 10 years (10 years X $0.50) (with the assumption that the profit will be maintained). If we expect that the profit will grow, of course, we will break even within shorter period of time (faster). Therefore, we need to ask ourselves: Is it a good deal to break even for ten years? or five years? Is the assumption logic, reasonable and achieveable in the future? In fact, the ratio of market price to EPS is the so-called PE. In other words, PE of 10 shows us that our investment is possible to be breakeven by 10 years if the assumptions are true. Therefore, we can use PE as a reference to determine whether the market price of a particular company is over-valued or not. Personally, I prefer PE less than 10. However, some exception is possible. For example, if we expect the growing rate of EPS is 30% annually, with purchasing price of RM1.20 for EPS of 10sen or PE of 12 (1.2/0.1), actually, we are going to breakeven by six year as stated below:

Year 1: 10sen
Year 2: 13sen
Year 3: 16.9sen
Year 4: 21.97sen
Year 5: 28.561sen
Year 6: 37.1293sen
Total: 127.56sen

Having a Strong Reason to Invest in Stock Market - A Simple Concept to Succeed

The first step is to identify the reasons why you want to invest in stock market. Is it to earn more wealth and money? If yes, how do you define more wealth and money? How much money you want to earn from stock market? Why you want to earn so much money? To provide better lifestyle to your family? To have more money to enjoy life?
Personally, the reason why I invest in stock market is - I hope I can learn some skills which can spend my free time wisely and can generate more money to improve my life and the people I know. And then, ultimately, I can use this skill to achieve financial freedom.
So far, I am quite satisfied my progress and results in stock market investment for last 18 months. In the beginning, I spent around three months full time to study what value investment is. After that, a value investment senior mentored me in stock market investment for another three months. His advice and experience sharing are vital for me to succeed in stock market investment with confidence and peace of mind.

Add +1 to Blogger to Stand Out Your Blogspot Content

Supposedly, all Blogger.com users only need to click on "Show Share Buttons" in their "Configure Blog Posts" (which is in Design, Page Elements) to show the +1 button. However, this feature does not happen in my XaivierChia.blogspot.com account! Maybe I have modified its HTML to suit my need, so my Blogger.com cannot generate the +1 button even though I click on the "Share Share Buttons" box already.

Nevertheless, luckily, I have unintentionally re-activated this plus one feature in Xaivierchia.blogspot.com. For those who have same experience as mine, all you need to do is copy the code from the Google website (Link is provided below), and then paste it in your HTML template just after the < Head >.

Current Social Issues: Parenting? - Unlimited Money versus Limited Time

Nowadays, parents invest most their time on other things to earn more money. And then use the money to buy somebody time to take care their next generation.
They lose the chance to look after their own kids themselves.
After that, their kids become youth "suddenly". Parents spend more time to earn more money to hire someone to "teach" their kids to excel in academic etc.
When kids become adults, what will happen to the parents? Yes, they just spend more time to earn more money in such a way they are affordable to hire someone to look after their parents....
The history keeps go on and go on.

The lesson I learn from this scenario is: please don’t spend too many limited time to earn unlimited money. Our limited time should be spent wisely on our invaluable assets, such as our kinship and friendship.

Investment: Gold Acts as A Safe Heaven During Crisis?

Here is my point of view about one feedback from my previous post, i.e. Investment: Gold Vs Stock Market - Can we eat gold for survive?
The feedback:
"We can not say we can eat gold for survive. But we can say gold is the way with the help of which we can survive. In this economic crisis of market gold is only way to invest and it acts as a safe heaven during crisis. Gold has an intrinsic value that never fades."
My views:
I do agree that gold has an intrinsic value that never fades. In fact, it is just like any other raw materials, e.g. silver, diamond and wood. But the question is - How do we assess or evaluate the intrinsic value of gold?

CIMB Clicks Account Alert - Scam Email

Last few days, I received two scam emails which were trying to phishing my CIMB account and password.

The reason why I am 100% sure that these are scam emails is because I did not have CIMB Click account. What a silly scammer. In addition, for those have received this kind of email, please simply move your "mouse pointer" to the re-direct link in the email, you will find out that you will be redirected to other website (phishing website) instead of the real (official) CIMB Clicks website, that is, http://www.nifterick.com/pf/cimbclicks/Login.html instead of the real website of http://www.cimbclicks.com.my/.

The main reason for me to highlight these emails in my blog is due to the fact that the email address of sender is too real, that is security.alert@cimb.com.my  and clicks@cimb.com.myTherefore, it is necessary to point it out and share it with my visitors so that anyone can get rid of this scam email.

Regret Free Parenting - Raise Good Kids and Know You're Doing It Righ (By Catherine Hickem) (Book Review)

Regret Free Parenting Raise Good Kids and Know You're Doing It Righ
By Catherine Hickem
Published by Thomas Nelson

Regret Free Parenting discusses seven principles for being intentional mum to have regret free parenting. These principles consist of understanding your purpose, knowing and affirming your child, being a vision keeper, developing emotional intelligence, maintaining your position, addressing your fear and being God-dependent. At the end of this book, both parenting plan and additional resources (i.e. website, tools, books and movies) are provided to help mum get started in their Regret-Free Parenting journey.
From this book, I have learnt that parent should invest in the areas of the greatest impact on their children’s quality of life (e.g. using their authority to teach children the important lessons of life), instead of try to make children happy about obeying them. For example, parent should teach their children that happiness is not about what they posses but is a contented state of mind that gives meaning and security to their lives.

Without hesitate, I called the hot-line of my internet service. Guess what, this line was really "HOT". I was forced to hear abundant of advertisement before I can ask something about the service. After few minutes of "online Q&A" session, the technical people told me that my device was malfunction, so I need to bring it to their technical office for further investigation and can change a new one.

Investment: Gold Vs Stock Market - Can we eat gold for survive?

Firstly, let's back to basic, what is the essential thing for us to survive? Gold? Company Share? Money? or food? (Ans: Food, water and air)If the crisis will really happen, then we better buy a house + few lands for plantation (Note: buying price and other criteria needed to be considered first). Then we can get rid of crisis. Simple.
In fact, if we don't have enough of money to buy farm or land, we can simply invest in some good company to share their profits.

Give you an example, if Group A got 100% gold in this world, and Group B got 100% land in this world, who will survive at the end of the day?
Again, can we eat gold for survive? Land can produce unlimited food, but a gold may only used to pay one food, for instance.

Experience Sharing: Pen-Friend

Ten years old, the use of Internet was not so general. Besides the so-called ICQ, knowing new friends via mail was still very popural. It is very hard to imagine Facebook, MySpace, Friendster etc. in the time. In this post, I am going to share with you about the so-called Pen-friend, which was a popular word in last decade.
Having few pen-friends was exciting. Your life will full of expectation, such as when the mail will be received and replied. You need to have enough patience and belief to maintain this kind of friendship. Guess what, I have zero pen-friend now. In fact, just like any other relationship, it requires mutual patience and belief. One hand cannot clap.

Tricky mathematics : Let's reverse engineer 6 / 2(1+2) = 1 or 9 ?

Recently, people are arguing the answer a simple mathematic solution of 6 / 2(1+2).
Generally there are two possible solutions for this tricky question.
1. The anwer is NINE. This is because the general rule of mathematic tells us that we should always calculate the thing inside the ( ) first, and then do the calculation of multiplication or division from left to right, and finally do the calculation of sum or minus.
That is, 6 / 2(1+2) = 6 / 2 (3) = 3 (3) = 9
2. The answer is ONE. Why? Let me do a simple "reverse engineering" from ONE.

Experience Sharing: Ones Determination is Stronger than the Help from Other

When I was in secondary school, I was very bad. To me, teachers were stupid because they always said something I did not know in the class. As a result, the only motivation for me to go to school was chatting with friends. Computer game was everything in my life. I was thinking to be the best game player among my friends. In fact, I was satisfied be the best in the virtual world. Therefore, I spent most of my time to "train" myself succeed in virtual world.

In this period of time, my parents were so worry about my future and they had no idea how to guide me to the right direction. Luckily, something "miracle" happened in my life after I went for a part-time job during school holiday.

Common English Grammar Mistakes: Incidence Vs Incident

According to Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English:

Incidence defines "the number of times something happens, especially crime, disease etc".
For example, poverty causes the incidence of crime increase in this area.

Incident defines "an event, especially one that is unusual, important, or violent".
For example, apart from the incident in Japan our holiday was completely trouble-free.

A Shortcut to Calculate the Square of any Two-digit Number Manually

It will be impressive if you can square any two-digit number in front of your friends without a calculator. The primarily requirement of this tips is you must very familiar with the calculation of the square of any single-digit number.

Let me assume that you are very familiar with it, then all you need to do is find a number, r that will make the first digit number become zero by adding (or minus). For example, the x of the square of 56 can be 4 or 6. If we choose 4, 56 + 4 is 60 (or if we choose 6, 56 - 6 is 50).

Blog Tour: Starting a Micro Business: Introduction, Review and Giveaways

(Cincinnati, OH) With unemployment rates high, the teen population is finding it harder and harder to find work. Adults are competing for the same minimum wage jobs. But there’s an alternative—starting a micro business. What is a micro business? It is a very small, one-person business that you can start easily and quickly with what you already know or own. No money needed, low risk and no debt! Students can spend as much time running a micro business as they wish and can even close it down during busy times. The best advantage for teens to own a micro business is that it not only brings in extra cash (often more than imagined), but students end up learning a great deal about business, money and themselves. It may lead to an entrepreneurial life or at the very least, prepare students for higher learning opportunities.

Get a FREE issue of the new Bloomberg Businessweek Now

After receiving and reading a FREE Copy of Shares Investment Malaysia Edition, I find out we also can get a free copy of new Bloomberg Businessweek as well via internet application.

First of all, let me summarize the previous free digest (Shares Investment Malaysia Edition):
The digest start from few current economy or business articles or reviews or forecast, then some fundamental summary of the listed companies, which include top turnover, top gainer, top loser, top dividend, top ROA etc, and then, follow by briefly reviews of each listed companies. However, one drawback I found after reading the digest is : It did not contain all listed companies. Maybe those companies, I was looking for, were too inactive. However, as an valued-investor, I always try to get rid of too active stock since most of them are over-valued or over-optimistic to the future performance.

Next, in order to receive a free copy of new Bloomberg Businessweek, all you need to do is go to the link below and fill out the form about your mailing detail.

Lunch, Dinner, Meal Price all Increases 10 percent (Malaysia 2011)

Inflation really powerful. Just now i went and buy dinner, you know, its price has been 10% increased, suddenly. From RM5.00 to RM5.50!!! And it happens in small hawker center!!! And it happens in a poor student like me!!! The boss just explained that the price of raw materials is increased, so they need to "adjust" the price of their food as well. Really? Maybe, but I think another reason is the hawker center always crowd of people. Supply and demand theory: When demand is higher than supply, the price, of course, will increase, and vice versa.

The difference between Amortization and Depreciation in Cash Flow Statement

Cash is the most important asset of a company. A good company has the able to convert its goods and services into cash as fast as possible. Besides producing cash from its goods and services, non-cash item such as depreciation and amortization are also considered as cash in the cash flow statement. This is one of the major reason why some companies are able to give dividend to its shareholders even though the company did not get any profit in that particular fiscal year. As a result, we should put much attention on both amortization and depreciation when we want to analysis and predict the cash flow condition of a particular company.

Common Mistakes: " Instead of " Vs "Insteads of"

Based on the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English in previous post, we understand that we only use "in terms of" in either plural or singular fact or event instead of "in term of". The latter does not applicable in any sentence.

Again, according to this dictionary, I realize that "insteads of " is also invalid in any sentence. In other words, we only use "instead of".

Although some people may argue that we should use "insteads of" for plural cases, "insteads of" simply do not exist in the dictionary.

Free Domain For Personal Use: co.cc + blogspot.com

Finally, I have registered the so-called free domain (http://xaivierchia.co.cc) for xaivierblog.blogspot.com. However, this free domain is only for personal instead of commercial, which will be charged a renewal fee of $3 annually. Besides, everyone (personal user) only got two free domains. After register this domain, you are required to set up it in 48 hours. If not, it will be canceled.

With this free domain, I set up a URL Forwarding in such a way that everyone can reach my blog via my new domain, http://xaivierchia.co.cc. Besides, you can hidden your real URL and displace it with the new domain. However, I do not think it is a good idea since visitors may not be able to copy or record the real URL for further review. This service (URL Forwarding) will function immediately after the set up is completed. Therefore, next time, you can just give your friend your new domain.

Financial Management: The Power of Inflation to Make Our Money Useless

So, what is the inflation rate last year? 5 percent? or 10 percent? If you ask me, I would suggest you calculate it yourself. In this post, I am going to record my experience toward this matter, inflation, in my life.

First of all, let's take my favorite bread as an example. I still remember, five years ago, when I was a high school student, the bread cost me $1.00. Guess what, it costs me $2.20 now!!! Only five years, my money has been diluted more than 100% !!!! In other words, can you image that if your salary is not increased 100% within 5 years, you can only eat the half of a bread now, compared to 5 years ago. Unfortunately, it is quite impossible that our salary will be increased 100% in that limited period of time.

Inspiring Story: To Succeed in your Life - Be a Good Sea Captain and Steer your own Life Yourself

Sometimes, we are just too used to living in a our familiar circumstance or comfort zone. Due to busy working routine day after day, we almost forget to think. To think about our life, To think about why I am doing particular thing right now instead of other activities. To think about the meaning of our existing. To think about the fact that everyone can make a difference to this world. To think about anything we want to think.

However, it is very dangerous if we just simply think about anything we want to think without any terms and conditions or guidances. Guidance help us to direct our life toward the right direction. Without guidance, our existing is just like a ship in a middle of ocean without a compass. A ship that is controlled by the trend of weather, wind and wave. Free Online Backup Services: Zumo Drive Vs DropBox - A Combination

I have utilized two kinds of online backup software, that are, Zumo Drive and DropBox, in my computer to backup some of my important documents since last few weeks. It is very important to backup our important documents in various methods, such as print it out, store it in external harddisk, burn it in DVD/CD etc. However, if natural disaster attacks our place, these kind of hardware backup methods look like quite useless and risky. Online backup, on the other hand, can be considered as one kind of remote backup via internet. Therefore, this method is quite promissing to variate our backup methods in such a way that our data can be stored safety. Before I explain how I have combined both Zumo Drive and DropBox to make my backup system looks like more variety and safer, let me introduce these service as below:

The Secret of Human Behaviour: Do you Learn From Mistakes or Others?

Most people do not learn from their mistakes. They just learn from what they want. For example, gambler only "learn" the lesson that they won money instead of they lost money. In investment, for instance, majority of the so-called investors "learn" the moment they earn money by taking incredible risk, instead of the moment they lost money. Obviously, majority people do not learn from their mistakes, but, from their pleasure. As a result, most of us are still struggling in the same problems and troubles, repeatedly, again and again. In this post, I am going to point out some important issues regarding students, investors, and employee, which might shift your paradigm, eventually.

Financial Freedom Plan – The power of Passive Income

Generally, the definition of financial freedom is the time that you are no longer needed to work hard for money. In other words, you have enough passive income to support your daily spending. For example, if you wish to have a passive income of 5,000 per month, or (5,000x12) 60,000 per year, and you are able to generate 10 percent return from your investment. By having a capital of 600,000, you already achieve your financial freedom. Pretty simple, huh? There is why investment is very important and is a must in the journey of financial freedom.

Malaysia Debit Card: Two Important Things You should Take Care While Use It

Besides different charge rate and refund period that we need to take care when we use our debit card in petrol station, there are another two important things we should know to avoid unnecessary loss when using our debit card. In this post, I am going to discuss them one-by-one based on my experience.

1. The receipt of Transaction

Situation:
What a surprise! Based on my observation, most people use to throwing away their receipt after any purchasing. This is a very dangerous behavior. On one hand, you cannot prove your transaction according if you want to claim something upon it, such as refund. On the other hand, it may cause delay of your inquiry because people take time to trace back your transaction, especially, you forget the date, the time, or the place of the particular transaction.

Happy Lunar New Year 2011 - Before, During and After the Festival

For Chinese, Lunar New Year is a very important festival that all the family members will gather together no matter where they are working currently. In this post, I am going to share with you about what we do before, during and after the festival.

Before Lunar New Year, all people is preparing to have a good sign at the beginning of the new year. A good sign includes "having a new beginning in the coming year", "all bad luck is gone", "good luck and fortune are coming" etc. Buying new clothes is one of the most common activities, I guess. Most important thing is to clean entire house, from inner to outer, to make it like a "new house" and "throw" the "old" and "bad" thing away. Besides, food and beverage should be prepared enough to treat guests who are going to come. After that, if affordable, some people will also decorate their house to make it full of New Year atmosphere.

Your Teen Can Own a Micro Business : How to Launch It in Ten Simple Steps

“I want to walk dogs; what do I need to do to get started?” asked a teen boy. I had inspired him to think about starting a micro business and he was ready to get going!

I encourage teenagers to start very small businesses—micro businesses. A micro business is a one-person business that can be started easily, usually without any up-front cash, using what a teenager already owns. Micro businesses are usually home-based and very flexible so a busy student can keep up with homework, sports and a social life.
